Abstract Objective: To compare the effectiveness of use of nasogastric and nasointestinal tube in elderly critically ill patients. Methods: Eighty elderly critically ill patients required enteral nutrition were randomly divided into nasogastric tube group and nasointestinal tube group. The nutriture in each patient were observed every 5 days, and complications and 30-day mortality during stay in ICU were also compared between two groups. Results: Serum albumin in nasointestinal tube group was significantly increased compared with that in nasogastric tube group (P<0.05). However, the other nutritive indicators were not significantly different between two groups (P>0.05). The incidence of reflux and aspiration pneumonia and 30-day mortality during stay in ICU were significantly lower than that in nasointestinal tube group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Enteral nutrition through nasointestinal tube is effective for elderly critically ill patients with high safety, and the incidence of reflux and aspiration pneumonia can be reduced to some extent.
