Abstract Objective: To study the impairment of brain function in post-hand-foot-mouth disease combined with encephalitis. Methods: Thirty-five post-hand-foot-mouth disease combined with encephalitis and 71 healthy controls were compared on various sensory integration ability and intelligence. Results: The prevalence of sensory integrative dysfunction in encephalitis group was higher than that in the control group (57.1% vs 32.4%, P<0.05). Significant differences were found between groups on measures of the total development quotient (91.5±10.0 vs 96.7±6.8, P<0.05). Conclusion: Impairment of sensory integration ability and intelligence is found in post- hand-foot-mouth disease combined with encephalitis infants. It is important to cause the attention of doctors and parents about this dysfunction.
