Abstract Furcation involvement is the periodontal lesion involving the root furcation area of multi‑root teeth, where periodontal pockets, attachment loss and alveolar bone resorption occur. The special anatomical structure of the root furcation area makes it very difficult to do the thorough debridement. In addition, the complex pathogenic factors lead to rapid progression of furcation involvement, making the treatment difficult. The loss rate of teeth with furcation involvement is higher than that of ordinary teeth. Therefore, early detection, accurate evaluation, and standardized treatment of furcation involvement is crucial for the prevention and control of periodontitis. This review summarizes the classical and recent researches home and abroad on the evaluation and treatment of furcation involvement, which is helpful to improve the clinical diagnosis and treatment of furcation involvement.
