Abstract Objective: To explore the intervention effect of group psychotherapy for opiate addicts with methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). Methods: A total of 203 patients from MMT clinic from March 2018 to March 2019 were randomly assigned to either local routine MMT (control group, n=100) or routine MMT plus group psychotherapy (intervention group, n=103). The scores of SCL-90, opiate-positive urine test results and treatment retention were compared between the two groups before and after intervention. Results: No significant difference was found in the total and each factor score of SCL-90 between the two groups before intervention (all P>0.05). After intervention, except for psychosis factor score (P=0.42), the total and other factor scores of SCL-90 in the intervention group were significantly lower than those in the control group (all P<0.05). Compared to the control group, the intervention group had lower proportion of opiate-negative urine tests and treatment retention after the intervention (all P<0.05). Conclusion: Group psychotherapy could effectively improve MMT patients’mental health while reducing the relapse rate and retention rate, thus further improving the efficacy of methadone maintenance treatment.
