Abstract Objective: To explores the influence of peer scaffolding on the cultivation of college students’ critical thinking ability (CTA) and its specific performance based on the student-centered group collaborative English teaching and learning. Methods: A total of 120 students were selected from two natural classes in the
department of Clinical Medicine, Wenzhou Medical University, with College English blended teaching adopted and practiced on a 16-week basis. The collected data were qualitatively analyzed using NVivo tools. Results: Group collaboration under the role of peer scaffolding was helpful for the cultivation of CTA; the scaffolding support of language, content and emotion given by peers during group collaboration had a certain impact on students’ meta-critical ability, critical cognition, and critical emotion. Conclusion: Designing effective group collaboration tasks, paying attention to students’ thinking and emotional quality, and creating a good group collaboration social environment are helpful to form a learning community atmosphere, thereby promoting the cultivation of CTA among group members.
