Abstract Objective: To investigate the current status and influencing factors of fear of hypoglycemia (FOH) in empty-nesters with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: A total of 193 empty-nesters with type 2 diabetes mellitus selected from the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University from August to December 2020 were investigated by convenience sampling. The demographic questionnaire, Chinese version of the fear of hypoglycemia scale 15, social support rating scale and self-rating anxiety scale were used for investigation.Results: The mean score of FOH for the empty-nesters with type 2 diabetes mellitus was (21.82±10.41), and the incidence of FOH was 19.2%. Binary logistic regression analysis showed risk factors of FOH included female(OR=3.453, 95%CI=1.250-9.537, P=0.017), primary school education (OR=3.972, 95%CI=1.170-13.483, P=0.027), oral therapy combined with insulin therapy (OR=4.701, 95%CI=1.339-16.507, P=0.016), the frequency of hypoglycemia (OR=4.336, 95%CI=1.582-11.883, P=0.004), and anxiety (OR=1.095, 95%CI=1.029-1.164,P=0.004). Conclusion: Attention should be paid to the assessment of FOH with relevant intervention for the empty-nesters with type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve their quality of life.
