The effect of ADMIRE-based low-tube voltage CT scanning on radiation dose and image quality of the upper abdomen |

Abstract Objective: To explore the effect of low-tube voltage CT scanning on radiation dose and image quality of the upper abdomen based on advanced model iterative reconstruction algorithm (ADMIRE). Methods: Totally 200 patients who had undergone upper abdomen scanning in Lishui Central Hospital from November 2016 to September 2017 were enrolled and randomly assigned to the control group (n=50) and the experimental group (n=150), who were all treated with ADMIRE with the tube voltage of 120 kV in the control group. Meanwhile, the experimental group was divided as low-tube voltage A, B, and C according to the body mass index (BMI) with the tube voltage of 80 kV, 90 kV and 100 kV respectively. Subjective scores of images, background noise standard deviation (SD), liver signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), liver contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and effective radiation dose (ED) were compared between each group. Results: There were no significant differences between the control group and all the low-tube voltage groups (P>0.05) in age, gender or CT values of erector spinal and the image quality scores, with all images meeting the clinical diagnostic requirements, but there were significant differences (P<0.05) in BMI and liver CT. The BMI of the low-tube voltage groups A and B was significantly lower than that of the control group, while that of the low-tube voltage group C was significantly higher than the control group. Liver CT value of the low-tube voltage group A was significantly higher than the control group. The background noise SD of the images of the low-tube voltage groups A, B, and C were significantly lower than those of the control group, while the liver SNR and liver CNR were significantly higher than those of the control group. Meanwhile, the ED of the low tube voltages A, B and C was significantly lower than that of the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: When applying the third-generation dual-source CT to the upper abdominal scanning, ADMIRE-based low-tube voltage scanning mode can significantly reduce the radiation dose and ensure the image quality.
