Abstract:Objective: To observe the effect of tropisetron on the incidence and development of postoperative delirium in elderly patients undergoing hip replacement operation. Methods: According to drug application, 212 elderly patients (age≥60 years) undergoing hip replacement operation were randomly divided into tropisetron group (108 cases) and control group (104 cases). General anesthesia were applied in both groups. In tropisetron group, 5 mg tropisetron was administered intravenously each day for 5 postoperative days. Control group was given saline solution instead of tropisetron. The rate of postoperative delirium in each group was evaluated by confusion assessment method (CAM). Routine nursing intervention and drug treatment was given to delirium patients in each group, and the curative effect was observed in three days. Results: Incidence of delirium in tropisetron group was 5.6% (6 cases), significantly less than control group 14.4% (15 cases). After routine nursing intervention and drug treatment, 5 (83.3%) of the 6 delirium patients in tropisetron group were cured, but only 4 (14.4%) of the 15 delirium patients in control group were cured. Conclusion: Tropisetron can apparently reduce the incidence rate of postoperative delirium in elderly patients undergoing hip replacement operation and improve the curative effect of conventional treatment of postoperative delirium.
