Abstract:Objective: To investigate the correlation between plasma Hcy and bone mineral density (BMD) in elderly male patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: Forty-five elderly male patients with T2DM were divided into osteopenia group (group A, 24 patients) and normal group (group B, 21 patients) according to the level of BMD. Correlations between Hcy, body mass index (BMI), blood calcium, blood phosphorus, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were analyzed in group A and groupB. Results: BMD and BMI in group A were significantly lower than those in group B (P<0.05). Hcy in group A was significantly higher than that in group B (P<0.05). Blood calcium, blood phosphorus, TC, TG, HDL-C and LDL-C had no statistically significant difference between two groups (P>0.05). Pearson correlation analysis showed that BMD was positively correlated with BMI (r=0.26, P<0.05), and negatively correlated with Hcy (r=-0.579, P<0.05). Conclusion: The decline of BMI and incline of plasma Hcy may associate with decreasement of BMD in elderly male patients with T2DM.
