A Meta-analysis of platelet-rich fibrin combined with hydroxyapatite in the treatment of periodontal bone defects

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate from the perspective of clinical indicators the therapeutic effect of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) combined with hydroxyapatite (HA) in the treatment of periodontal intrabony defects.Methods: Database such as PubMed, the Cochrane Library and Web of Science, VIP, Wanfang database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were searched until June 2023 for randomized control trials (RCTs) related to the combined treatment of PRF and HA and the treatment of periodontal intrabony defects with PRF or HA alone. Results: Altogether 9 RCTs and 354 periodontal intrabony defect sites were ultimately included.The Meta analysis showed that there were statistically significant differences in the probing depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), plaque index (PI), and gingival index (GI) changes between the PRF and HA combination group and the PRF or HA group. Conclusion: Current research evidence suggests that the combination of PRF and HA is superior to PRF or HA alone in the treatment of periodontal intrabony defects. However, more highquality literature is urgently needed to prove this due to limitations in the number and quality of the included studies.
