The effect of integrated behavioral model-based health education on the caregivers of autistic children

Abstract：Objective: To explore the effect of integrated behavioral model-based health education on family function, autism caregivers’ parenting self-efficacy, and illness perception. Methods: A total of 60 caregivers of autistic children were selected using convenient sampling method from a tertiary hospital in Wenzhou,Zhejiang Province. They were randomly divided as the intervention group and control group, with 30 cases in each. The control group was given routine health education, and the intervention group was given integrated behavioral model-based health education. A family assessment device (FAD), a tool to measure parenting selfefficacy
(TOPSE), and a brief illness perception questionnaire were used to assess family function, parenting selfefficacy,and illness perception. Results: After 6 months of intervention, each dimension of the family function in the intervention group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.001), and the scores of both
affective and emotional subscales and pressure subscale of TOPSE in the intervention group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). There was no statistical difference in illness perception between the two groups. Conclusion: Integrated behavioral model-based health education can improve the family
functional and parenting self-efficacy of caregivers of autistic children, but the effect on illness perception needs to be further explored.
