Abstract:Objective: To observe the curative effect and safety of combination of memantine and butylphthalide in the treatment of vascular dementia (VaD), the improvement of the cognitive function and behavioral capacity. Methods: Forty cases with VaD were randomly divided into 2 groups: one group treated with memantine and butylphthalide, the other group treated with memantine. MMSE scale and ADL scale of 2 groups were assessed and compared the pre-treatment with the treatment in 3 months, 6 months later. A comparative study was made to evalate the curative effects and side effects between 2 groups. Results: After treating with memantine and butylphthaliden for 3 months and 6 months, the ADL scores were (25.2±5.4) and (23.2±5.6) respectively, MMSE scores were (18.8±4.4) and (20.1±4.8) respectively. After treatment with memantine for 3 months and 6 months, the ADL scores were (26.6±5.9) and (25.4±6.1) respectively, MMSE scores were (18.1±4.9) and (18.9±4.7) respectively. The data compared pre-treatment with the two groups had statistical significance (P<0.05). The scores of MMSE and ADL after 6 months treatment between two groups have statistical significance (P<0.05). No serious adverse events was recorded during treatment. Conclusion: Combination of memantine and butylphthalide can markedly ameliorate the cognitive function and behavioral abilities in patients with vascular dementia. Its combination with butylphthalide is superior to its single use with high safety.
